3.2.2. Fixed or reflowable layout?

Fixed layout and reflowable layout are two different approaches to formatting and displaying content in ebooks. Ebooks produced can not be both.

Fixed Layout

In a fixed layout, the content is positioned on specific coordinates or regions of a page, much like a traditional print book. The structure and formatting are preserved exactly as designed by the author or publisher. Fixed layout eBooks are commonly used for content with complex designs, such as children’s books, graphic novels, cookbooks, or textbooks with rich illustrations. They often contain images, precise text placement, and fixed font sizes. The content is displayed consistently across different devices and screen sizes but may require zooming or scrolling to view the entire page.

Reflowable Layout

Reflowable layout, on the other hand, allows the content to adapt and adjust based on the screen size and user preferences. The text and images flow dynamically, adapting to the available space and user-selected font sizes. Reflowable eBooks are commonly used for novels, non-fiction books, and other text-heavy content. They provide a more flexible reading experience, as the text can be resized, and the reader can change fonts, adjust line spacing, and customise the reading experience to their liking. Reflowable layouts are compatible with various devices and screen sizes, and the content reorganises itself to fit the screen.

The choice between fixed and reflowable layout depends on the type of content and the desired reading experience. Fixed one is preferred when precise formatting, layout, and visual design are crucial, but it may be less flexible and may not adapt well to different screen sizes. A reflowable form offers better readability and flexibility across devices but may not preserve complex layouts and designs as accurately.

It is worth noting that reflowable formats are widely supported across various eReader devices and apps, while fixed layout formats require devices or apps specifically designed for eBooks.
